A Blessingway is a sacred pre-birth ceremony that has traditionally been performed by the native North American Navajo people, and celebrates a woman's rite of passage into motherhood. Today, a gathering known as a 'Mother Blessing' is gaining popularity as an alternative to a baby shower where the focus is on gift giving and the baby.
Renee gathered all the special women in her life to share their stories and their mothers stories, hopes and dreams and offer encouragement and support as she walks the path to motherhood. There are a few planned rituals (activities) lots of sharing stories and the event ends with a feast of delicious food bought along by each of the women. The energy was magical! I can highly recommend replacing the commercially driven gift-fest Baby Shower with a heart warming, life affirming collection of strong amazing women-folk!
Oh and don't worry - you can still bring out your inner stylist and go crazy making your gathering magazing worthly!
All the guests bring a plate of amazing food and after the truly touching and spiritual female energy connection activites - they feast!
Get ready to be moved to tears as you peak into Renee tribe of women honoring and blessing her path to motherhood........
They began with a welcome, introducing themselves and their female lineage ('I am x, daughter of y, grand daughter of z') and offered a blessing for birth, parenthood or Renee's future mothering life. They then each lit a small candle from the flame of the mother candle. The 'tribe' will then light their candle when Renee begins her labour and they offer a prayer or words of encouragement.
Next they offered a special bead, button or trinket to be strung into a birthing necklace - this will be worn during labour and birth for Renee to draw upon the spirit and energy of her tribe.
The last ritual was applying Henna to Renee's belly and to her friends - a lasting reminder to their day of bonding and celebration of womanhood.
Now doesn't this make your heart sing! Or if not, you can play nappy 'guessing poo' games and enjoy 400 bottles of baby powder.........
We also did a little film of Renee's Mother Blessing - go have a look.
